RGMAD Archive 1930-1958 Era

A group of published and unpublished geological maps from the 1930-1958 era that are part of the Historic Geological Map Archive under the Regional Geological Map Archive and Datafile Nationally Significant Database and Collection. The geological maps cover all or parts of New Zealand and its islands and may include maps of parts of Antarctica, Southern Ocean and South Pacific.

The unpublished geological maps are commonly preliminary compilations at larger scale with additional detail that were simplified for publication. These geological maps contain interpretation that is generally superseded by more recent geological maps. In many places, these geological maps show or use information about rock outcrops or landforms that are no longer visible, for example, due to erosion, excavation, building and road construction, dam flooding, or forestation.

The original paper or film physical format of the 312 maps (April 2025 count) in the group are stored in a secure archive at GNS Science building in Avalon, Lower Hutt. These are available for viewing on request.

Digital scanned versions of these maps are also available via the GNS Science Dataset Catalogue - a Search query ‘RGMAD Archive 1930-1958 Era’ will return the geological maps associated with this era and each map can be viewed, streamed into GIS software or downloaded from links provided.

Statement

This series of maps represents a loosely defined group of geological maps, some of which have been published, that have been compiled on various scale base sheets, from 1930 to 1958.

The individual maps were prepared with conventional manual cartography.

The Hard Copy Map has been scanned at 600DPI, down-sampled to 300DPI, and georeferenced. The digital images have been combined into ImageService dataset for dissemination and released as Web Map Service.
