New Zealand Stratigraphic Lexicon

The New Zealand Stratigraphic Lexicon (StratLex) is one of the “Nationally Significant” collections and databases recognised by the New Zealand government. It is a comprehensive database of formally named rock units from New Zealand and its offshore islands (including the Kermadec, Chatham and Subantarctic Island groups, but excluding the Ross Dependency, Antarctica). It includes biostratigraphic, chronostratigraphic, tectonostratigraphic, and miscellaneous informal names as well as conventional lithostratigraphic units. The database includes names of rock units with synonyms, hierarchical position, locality, geological age, and bibliography of significant articles.

Access is available online from the GNS Science web site.

Statement

Catalogues of stratigraphic names used in New Zealand have been compiled by various authors, in various formats (e.g. Adkin 1954, Fleming 1959, McGregor 1987, Raine & Keyes 1996). The present online version is continually updated as new literature is produced and comes to hand. At any time, entries are normally current to the previous year, or better. Please advise the StratLex Point of Contact if you encounter any omissions.

Data quality is controlled by requiring key populated fields to meet specific criteria before new data are entered or existing data updated. Completeness is ensured by making key fields mandatory. Consistency is addressed, wherever possible, using controlled lists (e.g., for parent and child records). However, it is incumbent upon those entering and/or updating and those using data to ensure the accuracy of data with respect to the original sources, as far as reasonably possible. Data checking is limited by available resources; errors are corrected when identified, and a few simple data auditing activities have been undertaken on an ad hoc basis, but we lack the resources to search for errors systematically. New data being added to Stratlex is derived exclusively from publications, most of which are peer-reviewed.
