NZL GNS GM11 geological units

This layer shows interpreted continental, oceanic, Large Igneous Province and island arc crust in and around Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia. Areas of poorly constrained crust are identified. High-level geological units of Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia comprise 500-100 Ma basement of Western Province terranes, Western Province Median Batholith, Eastern Provinces terranes and Eastern Province allochthons, and

Purpose

Spatial representation of an interpretation of the extent of continental, oceanic, Large Igneous Province and island arc crust in and around Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia, and high-level geological units of the Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia continent, both at and near the surface. The layer is compiled for use at a scale of 1:8 500 000.

Statement

Marine free-air gravity data release 24.1 of Sandwell et al. (2014) and GEBCO's 2019 continuous terrain model of the global oceans and land were the starting datasets for this layer. They were supplemented by geological information from Maurizot and Vende-Leclerc (2009), Edbrooke et al. (2015), Mortimer et al. (2017), Tulloch et al. (2019), GNS Atlas of Petroleum Prospectivity reports, and other sources listed in Mortimer (2020). All these data and information sources were collectively interpreted by Nick Mortimer and captured as vector data using QGIS software in 2019. Subsequent attribution and verification was done by Nick Mortimer and Belinda Smith Lyttle in ArcGIS.
