New Zealand Active Faults Database (NZAFD)
This database contains data pertaining to active faults in New Zealand. These are defined as those that have ruptured and/or caused ground surface deformation during the last 125,000 years (except for in the Taupō Volcanic Zone / Taupō Rift, where the definition of activity is restricted to only include the last 25,000 years). This database includes only onshore active faults, with the exception of offshore faults that ruptured during the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake. The database is produced by GNS Science and represents the most current mapping of active faults for New Zealand in a single database.
The NZAFD comprises multiple ESRI feature classes in vector format stored in a PostgreSQL database. Within the NZAFD there are two distinctly separate datasets described below:
1. The high-resolution NZ Active Faults Database (NZAFD-HighRes): https://doi.org/10.21420/8d5w-sc97?x=y
2. The 1:250,000 scale NZ Active Faults Database (NZAFD-AF250): https://doi.org/10.21420/R1QN-BM52?x=y
Web Service:
Many (although not all) components of the NZAFD are published in a combined web service at https://gis.gns.cri.nz/server/rest/services/Active_Faults
The layers are visible at different scales depending on the data resolution. The NZAFD-AF250 only turns on when zoomed out for viewing at a regional scale. When zoomed in, the detailed NZAFD-HighRes traces, Fault Avoidance Zones and Fault Awareness Areas turn on at levels deemed appropriate for viewing these high-resolution datasets.
Derivative datasets:
1. A combination of these two datasets has been used to derive Fault Awareness Areas (FAAs): https://doi.org/10.21420/wfcj-6062?x=y
2. The NZAFD-HighRes traces have been used to derive Fault Avoidance Zones (FAZs): https://doi.org/10.21420/q4yp-x771?x=y
