By 1 May 1876 the Lands & Survey Department had been formed, and the provinces abolished, New Zealand was then divided into Land Districts to which all survey and title records were registered against. In 1963 the Auckland Land district was divided, thus creating 'South Auckland'
The Land districts are:
1. North Auckland (NA)
2. South Auckland (SA)
3. Hawkes Bay (HB)
4. Gisborne (GS)
5. Taranaki (TN)
6. Wellington (WN)
7. Nelson (NL)
8. Marlborough (MB)
9. Westland (WS)
10. Canterbury (CB)
11. Otago (OT)
12. Southland (SL)
The Land districts were digitally captured as part of the development of the DCDB
With the introduction of Landonline the digital land district shapes were converted (unchanged) from the DCDB. Although Landonline utilises unique numbering for new cadastral records, land districts are still required for use with any survey records that were created prior to the data (associated with that land district) being converted to Landonline as many survey and title references are only unique by reference to the associated District..
