LiDAR was captured for The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Limited (NIWA) by Woolpert Ltd between 20 September to 21 December 2023. These datasets were generated by Woolpert and their subcontractors. Data management and distribution is by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand.
Data comprises:
- DEM: tif or asc tiles in NZTM2000 projection, tiled into a 1:1,000 tile layout
- DSM: tif or asc tiles in NZTM2000 projection, tiled into a 1:1,000 tile layout
- Point cloud: las tiles in NZTM2000 projection, tiled into a 1:1,000 tile layout
Pulse density specification is at a minimum of 8 pulses/square metre.
Vertical Accuracy Specification is +/- 0.2m (95%)
Horizontal Accuracy Specification is +/- 1.0m (95%)
Vertical datum is NZVD2016.

Airborne Laser Scanner (ALS) data was acquired from a fixed wing aircraft between 20 September 2023 to 21 December 2023, using Woolpert's Leica Terrain Mapper 527 laser scanner.
Survey Specification:
- Scanner: Leica Terrain Mapper-2
- Flying height: 2100m AMGL
- Scan angle: 40 degrees
- Pulse rate: 1700 kHz
- Swath overlap: 25%
- Swath points per M^2: 8
Sounds Surveying Ltd undertook field survey for this project, collecting Check sites to validate the accuracy of the LiDAR data and derivative products. Ground data in this volume has been compared to 2760 test points obtained by field survey and assumed to be error‐free. The test points were distributed in 62 groups across the mapping area and located on clear ground. Comparison of the test points with elevations interpolated from measured data resulted in:
Standard Deviation: 0.034m
RMS: 0.035m
Average Difference: 0.006m
Classification of the point cloud follows the classification scheme below:
1 - Unclassified
2 - Ground
3 - Low Vegetation
4 - Medium Vegetation
5 - High Vegetation
6 - Buildings
7 - Low Noise
9 - Water
17 - Bridge Deck
18 - High Noise
DEM comparisons were made between adjacent blocks to ensure consistency, blocks were found to align within 0.023m. A shift of ‐0.127 was applied to the data before testing against the check points to produce the results shown above. Horizontal Accuracy – the LiDAR data was compared to visible horizontal control using the intensity imagery. The data was found to fit well. The expected horizontal accuracy at 95% CI is 38cm, within the specification of 100cm. Data classification has been manually checked and edited against available imagery.
The deliverables to LINZ were:
1m gridded bare earth digital elevation model (DEM)
1m gridded digital surface model (DSM)
Classified point cloud
All product deliverables supplied in terms of NZTM map projection and NZVD2016 vertical datum.
