GeoNet Aotearoa New Zealand Earthquake Moment Tensor Solutions
A moment tensor describes the source parameters of an earthquake such as the focal mechanism (the geometry of how the crust ruptured in the earthquake) and the seismic moment (the amount of energy released). Since August 2003 when sufficient broadband seismometers were deployed, GeoNet has been able to routinely compute moment tensor solutions for New Zealand earthquakes with M > ~4. The CSV file of moment tensor solutions is updated when a moment tensor solution is calculated.

Once a moment tensor solution has been calculated, data quality is controlled by using a script which retrieves information from several input and output files and updates a CSV file with all mandatory information. An email with the same information is generated and sent to interested parties. The CSV file is uploaded to GitHub and the information is checked against the email to ensure they match before the database upload is approved. Once updates to the database are approved there are no further checks done to the database. The data are not peer-reviewed prior to populating the database; however, the moment tensor method and results have been documented in several peer-reviewed manuscripts. Field headers use terminology common to seismology and units for quantitative parameters are specified in a README file where appropriate, e.g., dyne.cm for seismic moment.
