Description

The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone and Waihemo Fault Zone geological map is approximately two-thirds onshore and one-third offshore. The map covers >3000 km2 of northeastern Otago. The onshore component extends from the Maniototo in the west to the Otago coastline in the east. The northern map boundary follows the Kakanui Mountain Range and Dunstan Mountains between the Maniototo inland to north of Shag Point on the coast. The southern map border extends south of Hyde township inland to south of Karitane township on the coast. The western, inland portion of the map encompasses the northeast trending Rock and Pillar Range, Taieri Ridge and Billys Ridge with native tussock. Between ridges, the valleys are a mix of exotic pasture and native tussock. Rock schist tors are common. Aligned parallel with the coast are the northern extent of the Silver Peaks. The land use is sheep and beef farming, with exotic forestry, gold mining, alluvial and hard rock quarrying and limited urban development. The offshore component extends some 25 km offshore to the Karitane Canyon.
